At the Tokyo show, the spotlight shone on what could only be described as the largest civilian electric vehicle, the T-Mad EV Pickup. With a remarkable electric range of over 600 miles, this colossal creation by IAT Automotive Technology Inc. left everyone in awe.

IAT Automotive Technology Inc., known for its expertise in assisting automakers with vehicle design and development, unveiled the T-Mad giga-pickup truck, a true marvel of engineering. It dwarfs the much-hyped Tesla Cybertruck, being nearly 7 inches wider and towering 5 inches taller. It’s as if someone took the iconic Hummer H1 and reimagined it for the digital age, adding a plethora of menacing features, from its formidable front bumper designed to handle anything in its path to its windowless, bunker-like cab and the massive 38-inch Gravedigger tires. The world got its first glimpse of the T-Mad at the Guangzhou Motor Show, and we had the opportunity to catch up with it at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 in Tokyo.

A Grand Entrance: Staircase Included

Opening the coach-style pillarless doors reveals a surprising featureā€”a two-step staircase that unfolds from the apparent rock rails, making it easier for passengers to climb aboard.

The driver’s seat is placed front and center to provide a clear view of the road and the surroundings. The steering wheel design takes inspiration from Elon Musk’s yoke steering, and all controls are easily accessible through large screens. Notably, the driving experience is still controlled by two pedals, suggesting a sophisticated drive-by-wire system.

Full Self-Driving Capabilities

Whether operated by a human or computer, the T-Mad is equipped with a range of sensors, including roof-mounted ones, aimed at achieving full autonomy. These sensors, positioned just above where a B-pillar might be, offer “cross-vision LIDAR with cloud computing.” The T-Mad offers two battery pack options, providing ranges of 373 or 497 miles. It’s worth noting that this is a slight reduction from the initial claim of 1,000 km (622 miles) at the Guangzhou debut. While the exact kilowatt-hour ratings remain undisclosed, one can expect them to be substantial.

Luxurious Diamond-Pattern Seating

Despite its immense size, the T-Mad can comfortably seat up to five passengers, thanks to its highly flexible seating arrangement. The three front most seats are supported by single pedestals, taking a page from the Tesla Model X’s book. The front seat can swivel 180 degrees, while the two middle seats can rotate 90 degrees towards the center, creating a unique conversation pit.

Innovative Features Galore: Pop-Up Rear Window

The rear glass, with a steep rake, can be raised on a pair of metal poles to allow for cabin ventilation and a touch of alfresco rear-seat riding.

Practicality Meets Innovation: Sliding Midgate and Seat

With the rear window raised, the rear bench seat can slide partway into the bed, offering a driving experience reminiscent of the Subaru Brat, for those tall enough to peer over the pickup box’s towering walls.

Availability and Expectations

IAT Automotive Design Inc. has set its sights on the Middle East, Australia, and the US markets with the T-Mad EV pickup concept. However, as of now, no automaker has taken up the challenge to bring this design to life. If an OEM at the Japan Mobility Show decides to pursue this groundbreaking vehicle, we can expect at least four years of development to address practical elements such as doors, windows, functional seats, and sand-proof seat tracks. At that point, the anticipated price tag would likely hover around half a million dollars or so.

The T-Mad EV Pickup is not just an automobile; it’s a bold statement of innovation, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of electric vehicles. With its extraordinary features and potential, it’s a glimpse into the exciting future of automotive design and technology.
